Centenary Series—Article 3, “He lived His Message: Radiating Wisdom, Truth, and Peace”

 

When the world speaks of education, it often measures progress in grades, qualifications, and professional placement. But over a century ago, in the remote village of Puttaparthi, a Divine Teacher redefined the purpose of education. For Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, true education was never about information—it was about transformation. He declared with divine authority: “The end of education is character” (Ref: Vidya Vahini, Ch1)

 

‘Vidya Vahini’—A Blueprint for Spiritual Education

In Vidya Vahini, a precious scripture of guidance for educators and seekers alike, Bhagawan outlines a powerful message: “Education should not be for living but for life. Its purpose is not to make a living but to enable man to live a meaningful life”  (Ref: Vidya Vahini, Ch 1). He warned that education, if divorced from morality, can become a tool for self-destruction and insisted that the true goal is the blossoming of the divine qualities latent in man and uplifting humanity.

 

The Five Eternal Values

Central to Sai Education are the five foundational human values:

  • Sathya (Truth)
  • Dharma (Righteousness)
  • Shanti (Peace)
  • Prema (Love)
  • Ahimsa (Non-Violence)

 

These are not to be imposed from outside but uncovered from within. Bhagawan emphasised, “These values are not to be added from outside; they are the very core of our being. They must be awakened and manifested” (Ref: Vidya Vahini, Ch 4).  They transcend religion, culture, and nationality. They are the divine heartbeat of all humanity. 

 

Integral Education Model

Bhagawan established a unique education system—from primary schools to universities—founded on the principle that character is more important than career. Each institution follows the formula: Academic Excellence + Spiritual Discipline + Selfless Service

 

In these sanctuaries of learning, the day begins with prayers, bhajans, and Veda chanting. Value-based living is not taught in isolation—it is woven into the very fabric of life. As Swami revealed:  “The teacher must be an exemplar, the student a seeker, and the school a sanctuary.” (Ref: Vidya Vahini, Ch 3)

 

Global Impact: SSSEHV

The Sri Sathya Sai Education in Human Values (SSSEHV) programme, inspired by Vidya Vahini, has spread to over 180 countries, transforming lives in schools, prisons, corporate training rooms, and village communities.  Bhagawan said, “Just as a lamp can light another, only a teacher who practises values can inspire values in children” (Ref: Vidya Vahini, Ch 8). From rural Africa to urban Thailand, this model has shown remarkable success—not through imposition, but by awakening the universal conscience within. 

 

Teachers: Builders of the Future

Bhagawan likened teachers to sculptors shaping not clay, but the very future of civilisation.  Their sacred role, He said, must begin with inner purity: “The teacher is a sculptor who shapes the future of society” (Ref: Vidya Vahini, Ch 7).  To teach values, the teacher must live values. It is not a profession—it is a sacred offering.

 

Sai Students: Embodiments of Values

Students from Sai institutions are trained not just in skills, but in selflessness and spiritual strength. They learn to

  • Revere parents and teachers
  • Speak truth with courage
  • Serve the needy without desire
  • Live righteously and remember God

These are not lofty ideals but daily disciplines. Bhagawan lovingly assured, “The student must emerge not just with a degree but with a shining heart and noble character.” (Ref: Vidya Vahini, Ch 6)

 

Relevance in Today’s World

In a time when the world is facing rising aggression, mental health crises, and moral confusion, the Sai model offers a luminous alternative.  Bhagawan warned, “An education without character is like a field without water—barren and dangerous”. (Ref: Vidya Vahini, Ch. 2).  HIS is not an alternative educational model—it is a divine prescription for the future of humanity.

 

Our Tribute in His 100th Year

As Divine Chancellor, Bhagawan shaped leaders of love, peace, and service. Let us honour His centenary by keeping His vision alive: “Let every student be a light to the world” (Ref: Vidya Vahini, Ch 9).   Let this light be our offering at His Lotus Feet
